Monster black hole eats worlds but hope remains as astronomers recover shredded remains of galaxy

by David Solomonoff

“A new study claims a supermassive black hole at the centre of our galaxy is ripping apart entire worlds …. Zubovas and colleagues propose Sagittarius A, which is 4,000,000 times the mass of the Sun, is destroying planets and asteroids that have formed in a torus of dust and gas around the black hole.”

On a brighter note, however:

“Astronomers have uncovered the shredded remains of a dwarf galaxy … The discovery will help scientists understand how galaxies consume smaller satellite galaxies, also known as galactic cannibalism.”
